Lately the security in our country has been alarming! There is news of theft, murder, kidnaps, assassinations among others every other day. These are happening to our neighbours, friends relatives and ourselves. This is what happened to a friend of mine last week on Thursday.
My friend David left for work with his wife and left the house help and the children in the house. Four hours later, there was a knock at the door. The house help opened and found a new face outside, usually it would be some bodaboda family friend they usually send to deliver things at home, but this time it wasn’t. She requested the man to identify himself and this stranger told her he was a friend of David. He then told her, David had given her some items to deliver home.( matoke, a box of milk, a box of gorillas and two toys). The house help asked the man ( who even hadn’t told her his name) to enter for a glass of juice as has been the family norm.
The stranger entered and found the children watching TV. These children were taught that every older person is auntie or uncle. They welcomed their “uncle” and started playing with him. He kept asking them if they wanted to go out with him, but they insisted that their house help would beat them. He then proposed to move with them at the supermarket to buy them some ice cream. They were very happy. They then agreed to go out with the stranger. Back in the kitchen, the house help was wondering why David bought another box of milk yet he had bought another one the previous day. It completely puzzled her. His wife is the only one that likes Matoke in the house, so it was very rare for him to buy a whole bunch of matoke for one person.
She brought the glass of juice to the stranger, as she was going back, her phone rang. She ran in the kitchen and picked it. It was David who had called to find if everyone was fine. The house help responded affirmatively and also confirmed to him that the delivery man had brought the items. David was confused at first as he had not sent anyone home to deliver anything. He then told her he hadn’t sent anyone. He told her to take the phone to him so he could talk to him and find out who it was. The house help ran back to the living room only to find that there was no one in the living room. As she was still thinking of where the man could be, the children came out of their bedroom dressed in different clothes. She asked them why they had changed, and they told her “uncle” was taking them to the supermarket to buy some ice cream. David was listening to all this as the phone hadn’t gone off. He told the house help that something was fishy and that she needed to lock the gate immediately and wait for him. David rushed home to find out if everyone was safe. Lucky enough, everyone was safe but no one identified the stranger.
This is one of the many kidnap scenarios we have had in our communities.
Important questions to ask oneself
1. What could have happened if David hadn’t called?
2. What could have been the motive of this stranger?
3. As a parent, what measures have you put in place at home to ensure the safety of you and your children?
4. Do you think this is the only home he has gone to?
5. Do you think the children and the house help might remember and identify the man in anyway?
6. Has something similar to this ever happened to you or a family you know of?
Definitely, we might not know the exact reason for the stranger’s visit, however, what we know is that this is a security crisis. When David reached home, everyone tried to describe the stranger but he didn’t understand or attach the description to anyone. He reported the incident to police and the police officers told him to tell the house help to always lock the gate. Can this be the ultimate solution in our communities? Of course not!
These are incidences where the CCTV camera becomes important. All this would have been recorded and they would have had an idea of the stranger’s identity, what exact time he came, how he came, how many people he came with, and how he went out of the gate. There are even cameras that can record voices, this means that what they discussed would have been recorded as well. And more so, for night threats, we have cameras that are embedded with a voice recorder and an alarm. You can select an area beyond which an intruder passes, an alarm is triggered which alerts the occupants.
These cameras can be configured on your phone or computer so that you are able to monitor whatever is happening at home at any time. You can also play back whatever you missed in case you had a busy day.
